The River Camp is a year-round rural retreat set on a wooded riverbank in central Iowa, conceived as a place of dual purpose: a genuine escape for families and children, and a fully equipped setting for professional gatherings and off-site meetings. The project introduces two tree houses and a riverside pavilion to a site of compelling natural character, each structure deliberately oriented to address the river views, the forest rising up the hill behind, and the expansive Midwestern sky, with a site plan shaped as much by light and landscape as by topography. The tree houses are connected by a suspended cable bridge, giving children the particular thrill of climbing high and crossing open air, the quintessential adventure of a summer that is remembered.

The pavilion serves the more considered needs of the working retreat: tech-enabled and conference-ready, it transforms into an open-air breakout space through collapsing glass walls that dissolve the boundary between meeting room and covered deck. Throughout, the construction is intentionally straightforward: steel and wood framing with Douglas-Fir plywood as interior wall finish, a frugality of means that lets nothing compete with the landscape itself. The exterior walls of all three structures are clad in cedar, and the decks are laid with oak planks, both sourced from urban salvaged trees that would otherwise have been chipped, burned, or sent to landfill. Rather than emitting carbon as conventional building materials do, this salvaged wood retains the carbon stored within it, meaningfully reducing the project’s overall carbon footprint. These are materials with a prior life, saved and repurposed to frame new ones.

The project was designed by Schorn + Architects, with OPN Architects serving as architect of record.
